Bradford Johnson is
in his late 50s, upper class and a well-dressed gentleman. He is a typical
Victorian aristocrat, a smoker, frequent visitor to exclusive clubs and as his
father before him considers men should always rule. He is a politician in the
British Parliament, following his father before him.
Bradford’s desire to
be in politics wasn’t as strong as his father. He wanted to be a ruthless
businessman only employing men. Despite being once married, his opinion of
women was low, partly due to his dad teaching him that men are the dominate
species. His mum on the other hand tried to teach him to have respect for women
but his father was too strong and powerful. His father often scared him and once
told him that he doesn’t want to go into politics, but was put into his place
physically.
His arrogance’s lead
his wife to leave thus allowing him to enjoy his male only lifestyle. He was
one of the chaps and would spend days with his fellow upper class friends. He
was even good friends with Molly’s father.
When he finally goes
into politics, his personal confidence grew. As the years went by, power went
to his head. He would do everything to make sure that the lower class would be
put in their place, believing he knew what is best for them. He distaste
towards women grew as they wanted more say in society. He believed that women
should remain at home and be seen and not heard, even the Queen (he was not a
supporter of her and didn’t even recognise her).
He particularly finds
Molly Campbell annoying as he considers her not worthy of a being a Victorian
lady and should be shut up. His hatred
towards her views leads him to persuade her to visit him to get rid of her. He would almost become obsessed by her. This
obsession lead to short tempers, anger and many found him hard to work with.
As he got older, his
views never wavered. His would often underhandedly receive huge amounts of
money which paid for his luxurious manor home outside of London with a
butler. From here he would tirelessly
work to make sure he kept his power and would bring down anyone who got into
his way.
